ABOUT

About Moving Past the Storm

What we'll do together...

At Moving Past the Storm, I am dedicated to providing a safe space for individuals seeking virtual talk therapy. My mission is to offer personalized, non-insurance-based therapy services to people who are ready to process life's challenges and make changes to their lives. Seeking out therapy takes vulnerability and courage, and I am grateful that you are ready for this step.

My role is to listen, interpret, reflect, and work together to find solutions so you can make changes. Most of our problems are more of a change to our perspective and thoughts.

I will help you make changes to the way you talk, think, and behave through helping you understand how the way you think is both unhelpful and helpful. We will use strategies like the ABC method (action, belief, consequence), challenging beliefs, relaxation and grounding techniques, identification of feelings, and practicing new ways of talking/thinking.

Trauma therapy takes time, is emotionally-charging, requires patience within yourself, and a lot of change to your thoughts and behaviors. â€‹

You are doing the work, I am here to support you.

Who I am and what I have done...

My own journey started in Utah at Salt Lake Community College and progressed to the University of Utah for my BS in Psychology/Criminology followed by an MS in Social Work, with an emphasis in criminal profiling in 2005. Over the years, I have worked in UT, FL, VA, MO, GA, and have returned to CT, where I was born and raised. I have been doing virtual/telehealth therapy since February 2024.

With over 20 years of experience in mental health therapy, I have worked in many settings with a diverse population. These include: incarcerated adolescents, inpatient crisis/stabilization units for adults, substance use treatment centers (both inpatient and outpatient), outpatient therapy for adults, and with Active Duty military members, on multiple installations, most recently at the Pentagon. During my time with the military population, we worked on combat trauma, sexual trauma, other PTSD-related traumas, depression, anxiety, communication, retirement and transition, deployments, social support, and dealing with difficult people.

I have helped people with sleep issues, managing stress, depression, anxiety, understanding how taking care of oneself fuels better decision-making, and forming lasting relationships with healthy boundaries and assertive communication.

"After waiting years to speak with a behavioral health professional about combat experiences, I'm thankful to have someone like Ms. Ball who is easy to talk to, creates a comfortable environment, and challenges me to think through my issues with effective weekly assignments."

Anonymous, Pentagon client

"With a complicated, unpredictable and often overwhelming day to day life, Samantha has provided me with a place and time to reflect, evaluate and learn to balance where I place my energy and focus."

JM, client

Samantha creates a safe space for open, down to earth conversations and is highly skilled in navigating highly complex mental health issues. I would not be the better version of myself that I am today without her.

DF, client

"Samantha Ball was great to work with. She took the time to listen and understand. She made me feel comfortable to open up about situations and offered great support and resources."

Anonymous client

Sam's no-nonsense and kick-ass approach works to help clients help themselves.

Ms. Cleveland, LCSW

Samantha's therapy services are exceptional. She offers personalized, compassionate care that supports meaningful progress and genuine healing.

WB, Pentagon client

Samantha is a very competent social worker that has worked in the field a long time. Her resolve allows her to be a solid sounding board to her clients. I have learned a lot from her.

Ms Denniston, LCSW

What I value most about Samantha is her ability to challenge me with kindness, helping me uncover root issues and break patterns. She’s equally comfortable offering structured tools for anxiety or just providing a safe space to vent.

I have decided to settle into virtual therapy via Zoom (HIPAA compliant)  recently to cover a broader range of clients across CT, making your access to care easier. Many of my current clients are located in the New Haven County area, so I am looking to expand across the Middlesex County and New London County area as well. This way, when I do open my office, I will establish myself somewhere in the middle, allowing physical access to allow in-person appointments sometime in early 2025. I will still be available via Zoom thereafter, but it will allow those who want in-person sessions to be seen in a more traditional format.

While I am only seeing "cash-paying" clients, I am happy to provide assistance to those who would like to submit a bill to their insurance company. using a "superbill", which you would provide to your insurance company (or coinsurance) for reimbursement. I also accept many forms of payment, including credit cards, Venmo, Cash app, and PayPal.
